25,836 COMBUSTORS AND METHOD OF OPERATING SAME Abstract of the Disclosure New combustors, and method of operating same, which produce lower emission of nitrogen oxides from high nitrogen content fuels are provided. The fuel-air equivalent ratio 0 in the primary combustion region is corre- lated with the residence time in said primary combustion region so as to ob- tain reduced conversion of fuel-nitrogen to NOx emissions. Preferably, the percent swirl air (of the total air) admitted to the mixing region and then into the primary combustion region of a combustor or a combustion zone is also correlated with said equivalence ratio and said residence time so as to obtain the minimum conversion of fuel-nitrogen to NOx emissions.
