A communication system comprising a communication network confiigured to permit connection of a plurality of communication terminals; a searchable companionship information database associated with the communication network; a monitor for monitoring the connection status of authorized users; a connection status indicator for indicating to the authorized connected users the connection status of the authorized users; and a message manager configured to provide a facility for a sending authorized connected user to send a video or audio point-to-point carnmunication to a receiving authorized connected user according to the following method: (1) creating a video message in a manner such that the video message is unavailable to the receiving authorized connected user until it is sent by the sending authorized connected user and (2) when the creating step is complete, sending the video message as a video point-to-point communication to the receiving authorized connected user.
