A method and system for conducting rapid control traffic in a time division multiple access (TDMA) communication system comprises a base station communicating with a plurality of user stations in assigned time slots of a time frame (601). For bearer traffic, time slots are assigned to particular user stations for an extended duration. In unassigned time slots, the base station transmits a general polling message indicating availability of the time slot. A user station desiring to hand off communication from one base station to another uses multiple available time slots at the target base station for exchanging control traffic messages with the target base station. The next available time slot is indicated by a slot pointer in the header of each general polling message to facilitate rapid exchange of control traffic messages. During handover, the user station may establish a new link with the target base station before relinquishing the existing communication link with the old base station.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un système de trafic de commande rapide dans un système de télécommunications à accès multiple à répartition dans le temps (TDMA) comprenant une station de base communiquant avec une pluralité de stations d'usagers dans des créneaux temporels attribués d'une trame temporelle (601). Pour un trafic sur voie support, des créneaux temporels sont attribués à des stations d'usagers particulières pendant une durée prolongée. Dans des créneaux temporels non attribués, la station de base transmet un message d'invitation à émettre général indiquant la disponibilité du créneau temporel. Une station d'utilisateur désirant transférer la communication d'une station de base à une autre utilise des créneaux temporels disponibles multi-usages sur la station de base cible, pour l'échange de messages de trafic de commande avec la station de base cible. Le créneau temporel suivant disponible est indiqué par un pointeur de créneau dans l'entête de chaque message d'invitation à transmettre général, en vue de faciliter l'échange rapide des messages de trafic de commande. Durant la commutation, la station d'utilisateur peut établir une nouvelle liaison avec la station de base cible avant abandon de la liaison de communication existante avec l'ancienne station de base.
