A radio control section in a mobile station determines the type of communication either based on the contents of a control signal demodulated by a voice modulator/demodulator and a high-speed data modulator/demodulator or based on the state of connection of an external device (not shown) to I/O terminals. The radio control section controls a switch so that modulation and demodulation may take place selectively in the modulator/demodulator for voice communications or in modulator/demodulator for high-speed data communications. The mobile station thus selectively uses a radio line for voice communications or a radio line for high-speed data communications.
