COMMUNICATION UNIT IDENTIFICATION METHOD AND APPARATUS Abstract of the Disclosure A method and an apparatus by which a communication unit (104) receiving a call, initiated by another communication unit (102) in a communication system, may identify the initiating communication unit by an identification (ID) alias corresponding to that initiating unit. An ID code corresponding to the communication unit initiating the call is included in the call signal (308). The receiving unit then determines the ID alias of the calling unit and presents the ID alias to the user of the receiving unit. According to an aspect of the invention, the receiving unit has a list stored therein containing the ID codes of many units in the communication system and the ID aliases corresponding to those ID codes. The receiving unit sequentially compares the received ID code with an item in the call list. When the receiving unit finds a match between the received ID code and an ID code in the call list, it presents the ID alias corresponding to the received ID code so that the user of the receiving unit may easily identify the unit initiating the call.
