Communications cable is routed within horizontal pathways between the structural ceiling and drop ceiling to a fire-resistant cabinet mounted between the ceilings. Communication cable switching and termination equipment is carried by the cabinet for providing a consolidation point and cross- connect location for both copper wire and optical fiber cables serving work stations within an open office architecture. The cabinet includes an access door opening into a room below the drop ceiling for providing user access to the equipment. The door lies within the drop ceiling plane when in the closed position. A removable equipment mounting plate is carried by the cabinet for lowering the equipment below the drop ceiling when the door is in the open position. Cabinet fire-resistant side wall penetrations permit the communications cable routed between the ceilings to enter and exit the cabinet for connection with the communications cable switching and termination equipment. With the use of the cabinet, the amount of communication cable required to service work stations in an open office architecture is greatly reduced.
D'après cette invention, un câble de communication est posé dans des voies horizontales entre un plafond structurel et un faux plafond jusqu'à un boîtier à l'épreuve du feu qui est disposé entre les deux plafonds. Les équipements de fin de ligne et de commutation du câble de communication sont montés dans le boîtier de manière à fournir un point de consolidation et un emplacement d'interconnexion tant pour les câbles en cuivre que pour les câbles de fibre optique qui desservent des postes de travail dans une architecture de type bureaux communiquants. Ce boîtier comprend une porte d'accès qui donne dans une pièce en-dessous du faux plafond et qui permet à un utilisateur d'accéder aux équipements. Lorsqu'elle se trouve en position close, cette porte se situe sur le même plan que le faux plafond. Une plaque amovible de montage d'équipements disposée dans le boîtier permet d'abaisser les équipements en-dessous du faux plafond lorsque l'on ouvre la porte. Des ouvertures pratiquées dans les parois du boîtier à l'épreuve du feu permettent au câble de communication circulant entre les plafonds d'entrer et de sortir dudit boîtier afin d'être connecté aux équipements de fin de ligne et de commutation de câble. Le recours à un tel boîtier permet de réduire grandement la quantité de câble de communication nécessaire pour desservir des postes de travail dans une architecture de type bureaux communiquants.
