ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flexible optical signal transmitting cable is provided which comprises a plurality of elongated wave shaped optical fibers which extend in an axial direction and transversely corrugated, longitudinally seam welded, metallic tubular member formed about spacially separated from the plurality of optical fibers and which only partially fill the inner cross-section of the metallic tubular member. Water resistant support means is provided which fills the unoccupied remaining portions of the complete interior cross-section of the metallic tubular member along at least longitudinal intervals of the metallic tubular member. The water resistant support means prevents axial propogation of any water penetrating the interior of the metallic tubular member and provides direct, non-rigid, radial support for each of the optical fibers within each of the longitudinal intervals of the tubular member for permitting unilinear axial unfolding thereof upon tensional forces being applied thereto. The optical fibers have been continuously formed by feeding such in a longitudinal path while simultaneously shaping a metallic strip about the optical fibers into a tubular member, injecting a water resistant filler material at a first point along the longitudinal path prior to the closing of the opposite longitudinal edges of the metallic strip and welding the longitudinal edges and corrugating the welded tubular member downstream of the first point.
