COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM Abstract of the Disclosure A communications system, such as a remote data acquisition and control system comprising a central unit (10) and a number of remote units (11-18) divided into user groups (system X and System Y). The central unit sends an outbound signalling word (OSW) including an address and, selectively, one or more qualifiers. Each remote unit is pre-programmed with a unique ID, comprising a base address and an offset and one or more qualifiers applicable to that unit. Each remote unit of a user group is assigned the same base address. Each remote unit receives an outbound signalling word (OSW) from the central unit, responds to that OSW if the address included in the OSW is the base address of the user group of that unit, compares a received qualifier with the one or more qualifiers of that unit when the address is the base address of the user group of that unit and suppresses response if the qualifier does not correspond.
