The communications installation (PBX) is connected to a broadband connection unit (BB-AE) provided with a network connection interface (STM1) and the communication terminal devices (KE) are connected to the communication network (ATM-KN) via transfer units (ATM-HUB). The broadband connection unit (BB-AE) comprises converter units (STMAX) that are allocated to the transfer units (ATM HUB), enabling bi-directional conversion between the data format of the packet-oriented communication network (ATM-KN) and an internal switching installation data format. The broadband connection unit (BB-AE) also comprises a switching matrix module (BB-KN) that combines data that is to be transmitted from the converter units (STMAX) to the allocated transfer units (ATM-HUB).
Selon l'invention, une installation de communication (PBX) est reliée à un réseau communication (ATM-KN) par l'intermédiaire d'une unité terminale à large bande (BB-AE) présentant une interface de raccordement au réseau (STM1), et les terminaux de communication (KE) sont raccordés audit réseau de communication (ATM-KN) par l'intermédiaire d'unités de transfert (ATM-HUB). L'unité terminale à large bande (BB-AE) présente des unités de conversion (SSTMAX) affectées aux unités de transfert (ATM-HUB). Ces unités de conversion effectuent une conversion bidirectionnelle entre le format de données du réseau de communication orienté paquets (ATM-KN) et un format de données interne au central. En outre, l'unité terminale à large bande (BB-AE) comporte un module de matrice de commutation (BB-KN) pour le regroupement des données à transmettre par les unités de conversion (STMAX) aux unités de transfert (ATM-HUB) associées.
