A tray (10) having a pair of stamped instrument racks (38) includes a pair of side walls (16) which taper transversely and longitudinally toward each other at their opposite ends. The tapered ends form wedge-like extensions which lead into a pair of rounded end walls. The tapered ends and rounded end walls form a chisel shaped profile which facilitates insertion of the tray (10) into an autoclave bag. A spring-actuated retainer (70) is operable with one hand to secure or release a plurality of instruments held in the racks (38).
