A compact disc drive apparatus (20) has been modified for use in a data processing environment. Decoding of first and second error protection levels is effected locally. A five-bit wide interface to a host controller (22) is defined: - a one bit wide data path (52) - a one bit wide clock path for validating each data bit with a clock pulse (50) - an error-attention line for signalling data errors, drive errors, spin-up/non spin-up situations and illegal commands (48) - a command line for receiving controller commands (46) - and a response line for transferring parameter and status bytes to the controller.
