A system and method for tracking compact discs during manufacture comprising a spindle having a central shaft and a base for carrying a plurality of compact discs, memory means connected to the spindle, and data transfer means cooperating with the spindle to send and receive information identifying compact discs carried by the spindle and/or providing processing information about compact discs carried by the spindle from or to the memory means.
