The compact five ring stuffing box packing assembly (56) includes high density metal inserted braided end rings (64, 66) of graphite which have each been die formed to have angled facing surfaces. Three low density graphite preform rings (58) having angled facing surfaces are contained between the high density braided end rings (64, 66). The facing surfaces of the preform rings extend at a different angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the packing assembly than do the facing surfaces of the braided end rings. The braided end rings provide a support function for the preform rings as well as a stem wiping function.
Cette invention concerne un ensemble (56) de garniture de presse-étoupe à cinq anneaux qui comporte des anneaux d'extrémité tressés à insertion de métal de grande densité (64, 66), constitués de graphite et matricés chacun de façon à présenter des surfaces inclinées se faisant face. Trois anneaux de préforme (58) en graphite de faible densité ayant des surfaces inclinées se faisant face sont disposés entre les anneaux d'extrémité tressés de grande densité (64, 66). Les surfaces se faisant face des anneaux de préforme sont disposées suivant des angles relatifs à l'axe longitudinal de l'ensemble de garniture qui sont différents de ceux des surfaces se faisant face des anneaux d'extrémité tressés. Ces anneaux d'extrémité tressés assurent une fonction de support des anneaux de préforme de même qu'une fonction de balayage de la tige.
