ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A compact fluorescent lamp includes a lamp base for supporting the lamp and for receiving electrical energy, a ballast circuit, and a fluorescent lamp tube mounted to and supported by the base. The ballast circuit is supported by the base and extends upwardly from the base into a central portion of the region normally occupied by the lamp tube. The fluorescent lamp tube includes a plurality of interconnected tube sections that surround the ballast circuit. The fluorescent lamp tube preferably include three or more generally U-shaped portions that are interconnected to form a continuous discharge path. The compact fluorescent lamp has a short overall length and can be installed in many incandescent lamp fixtures. The lamp tube has a long discharge path and utilizes a relatively large diameter lamp tube. As a result, the life and efficiency of the lamp tube is extended.
