Abstract A heat exchanger element comprises a number of parallel tubes stacked on top of each other. The tubes have a small hydraulic diameter and consist of initially circular tubes which have been compressed to assume a generally rectangular cross-section with fixed height and width. In certain sections along the tubes the compression has been made s-lightly less whereby the height is greater in these sections than in other portions of the tubes. These sections having a greater height constitute spacer means between the stacked tubes. The tubes are connected at both ends to manifolds having connections for the refrigerant. The tube pack is disposed in an outer casing having connections for the heating medium. The latter medium is thus adapted to pass between the compressed tubes, said medium being the cooling medium when the element constitutes part of an evaporator and heating medium when the element is part of a condenser. The flow passages of the heating medium are generally rectangular and have a small hydraulic diameter, too.
