This invention relates to a compact solid oxide fuel cell stack comprising a plurality of concentrically arranged tubular solid oxide fuel cells and end caps connecting the fuel cells. The end caps have inlets and outlets for the flow of fuel and oxidant through the stack. The arrangement of the fuel cells with in the stack define extended reactant flow paths to provide higher residence time for the reactants in the stack, thereby improving fuel conversion in an electrochemical reaction.
