In the invention, 'compact portable escape ladder', providing an escape ladder for emergency use from a building window, with distinct advantages of being compact and storable, portable and light, and substantially rigid in use against a building wall. In use, the ladder is dependant of a frame set saddle fashion over an opening. From the frame pivots the top rung assembly comprising of a horizontal rung with a vertical rail connecting at each end, which has at its top an eye formed vertically connecting the frame above. Suspended downward, a series of similar rung assemblies, each connected by a eye formed horizontally at the top of each rail, encircling the rail of the next rung assembly upward. The inside diameter of the eye is slightly larger than the rail allowing a slide fit enabling the ladder to nest compactly or extend to length under gravity.
