2096749 9210062 PCTABS00013 A compensation control for an off-premises CATV system includes an automatic gain control and an automatic slope control. A first feedback control (302, 306, 310) is used to compare a first portion of a television signal to a first reference level and null the error. A second feedback control (304, 308, 312) is used to compare a second portion of the signal to a second reference level and null the error. In a second embodiment, the second feedback control differences first and second portions of the television signal. The reference level for automatic gain control is equal to the attenuation between the off-premises equipment and the subscriber premises plus the desired level at the subscriber premises. The level of a jamming signal is set to fall within a range of power levels related to the reference level.
