In transmission of optical signals in a dispersive medium, the signals are transmitted simultaneously in two modes in an optical fibre (15), which are orthogonal to each other, one of the signals being a non- chirped amplitude modulated signal modulated by an amplitude modulator (3), and the other signal is a phase modulated signal modulated by a phase modulator (5). The received signal is formed by the sum of the amplitude modulated contributions of the two signals. In an optical fibre system, two orthogonal modes of po~rization in the same fibre can be chosen. In this manner it will be possible to transmit high bit rates and primarily over long distances.
Lors de la transmission de signaux optiques dans un milieu dispersif, les signaux sont, dans une fibre optique (15), transmis simultanément en deux modes qui sont orthogonaux l'un par rapport à l'autre, l'un des signaux étant un signal en modulation d'amplitude de fréquence non pulsée, modulé par un modulateur d'amplitude (3), et l'autre signal étant un signal en modulation de phase, modulé par un modulateur de phase (5). Le signal reçu est constitué par la somme des contributions en modulation d'amplitude des deux signaux. Dans un système à fibres optiques, on peut choisir deux modes orthogonaux de polarisation dans la même fibre, ce qui permet la transmission de débits binaires élevés et surtout la transmission sur de longues distances.
