ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies is disclosed. This ELISA technique is more sensitive, more specific, and more accurate than known ELISA techniques. The com- petitive ELISA of this invention is particularly suited to the detection of human T-cell leukemia-lymphoma virus type III (HTLV-III). More specifically the invention relates to a method for the detection antibodies in a test sample, the method characterized by the steps of coating microtiter plates with purified antigen to form antigen-coated wells; preparing specific heterantiserum reactive with the antigen; incubating the antigen-coated wells with the heteroantiserum; incubating test sera in the antigen-coated wells and testing each well for the amount of absorbance of antibody in the test sera.
