Disclosed is an electrochromic device which comprises first and second electrode surface confined electrochromic materials in an ionically conductive solution. The first electrochromic material is a polymeric electrochromic material able to change from a substantially colorless state to a colored state upon reduction and the second electrochromic material is able to change from a substantially colorless state to a colored state upon oxidation.
