A composition and method for providing a wear-resistant and fuel-saving coating on metals, particularly metal surfaces within internal combustion engines. A source of ammonium ions, an alkali metal in an aqueous medium, and the coating metal to be applied to the surface are combined to produce an electrolyte solution comprising a complex ion mixture. The electrolyte solution can be used to deposit the coating metal on conductive substrates. The coating metal may comprise phosphorus, sulfur, carbon, bismuth, boron, silicon, and combinations thereof. The electrolyte solution can be dehydrated in a hydrocarbon medium, thus providing novel materials for use as lubricating oil additives and as fuel additives. These new surfaces may significantly reduce coefficient of friction, smooth the flame front, reduce corrosion, enhance fuel economy, and reduce hydrocarbon emissions when used in internal combustion engines.
L'invention concerne une composition et un procédé permettant d'appliquer un revêtement sur des métaux, notamment des surfaces métalliques dans des moteurs à combustion interne, ce revêtement étant résistant à l'usure et réduisant la consommation de carburant. Une source d'ions d'ammonium, un métal alcalin dans un bain aqueux et le métal de revêtement à appliquer sur la surface permettent d'obtenir une solution d'électrolyte contenant un mélange d'ions complexe. La solution d'électrolyte peut être utilisée pour déposer le métal de revêtement sur des substrats conducteurs. Le métal de revêtement peut contenir du phosphore, soufre, carbone, bismuth, boron, silicone et leurs combinaisons. La solution d'électrolyte peut être déshydratée dans un bain d'hydrocarbure, fournissant ainsi de nouveaux matériaux à utiliser comme additifs d'huile lubrifiante et comme additifs de carburant. Ces nouvelles surfaces peuvent nettement réduire le coefficient de friction, adoucir le front de flamme, réduire la corrosion, réduire la consommation de carburant et réduire les émissions d'hydrocarbure lors de leur utilisation dans des moteurs à combustion interne.
