An apparatus for conveying signals between a communications card and a signal utilization device or network. In one form (Figs. 1,2), structures are provided for receiving one or more RJ series plugs and for making electrical connection with at the contacts on the plug and conveying any signals on the contacts to a communications device such as a telephone, facsimile machine, modem, or a local area network adapter. A body (102) includes one or more recesses (106) which receive the plug. An expandable and stretchable membrane (114) isolates the contacts in the plug from electrical contact with an object in a surrounding environment such that passage of current from one or more of the electrical contacts to an object present in the surrounding environment is prevented. Also provided (Figs. 7, 14) is a replaceable direct access arrangement (151, 258) which is replaceably held within the communications device (150, 250). Both the structures providing the receptacles and the direct access arrangement are easily removable in case of damage or if other functions are desired. The replaceable direct access arrangement allows operation in countries having different telecommunications standards and allows operation with many different communications devices. Alternative structures for allowing connection to RJ series plugs are described. Wireless communication structures are also described.
L'invention concerne un appareil destiné à transporter les signaux entre une carte de communication et un dispositif ou un réseau utilisant les signaux. Dans un mode de réalisation (Figs. 1, 2), des structures servent à accueillir une ou plusieurs fiches série du type RJ, à assurer la connexion électrique de ces fiches au niveau de leurs contacts et à transporter tous signaux transmis aux contacts vers un dispositif de communication tel qu'un téléphone, un télécopieur, un modem ou un adaptateur de réseau local. Un boîtier (102) comprend un ou plusieurs enfoncements (106) qui accueillent la fiche. Une membrane souple extensible (114) isole les contacts à l'intérieur de la fiche contre tout contact électrique avec un objet se trouvant dans l'environnement, et ce de manière à empêcher tout passage du courant depuis un ou plusieurs contacts électriques vers un objet présent dans l'environnement. L'invention concerne également (Figs. 7, 14) un ensemble interchangeable à accès direct (151, 258), monté amovible à l'intérieur du dispositif de communication (150, 250). On peut enlever facilement la structure comportant des réceptacles et celle à accès direct en cas de panne ou lorsque l'on désire d'accéder à d'autres fonctions. L'ensemble interchangeable à accès direct permet de faire fonctionner un dispositif dans des pays ayant des formats différents en manière de standards de télécommunications ou de le faire fonctionner avec de nombreux dispositifs de télécommunications différents. L'invention concerne en outre des structures alternatives permettant la connexion aux fiches série du type RJ ainsi que des structures de communication sans fil.
