The invention provides a composite armor plate (22) for absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy from high velocity projectiles, the plate comprising a single internal layer of pellets (24) which are directly bound and retained in plate form by a solidified material (16) such that the pellets are bound in a plurality of adjacent rows, characterized in that the pellets (24) have a specific gravity of at least 2 and are made of a material selected from the group consisting of glass, sintered refractory material, ceramic material which does not contain aluminium oxide and ceramic material having an aluminium oxide content of not more than 80 %, the majority of the pellets each have at least one axis of at least 3 mm length and are bound by the solidified material in the single internal layer of adjacent rows such that each of a majority of the pellets (24') is in direct contact with at least 4 adjacent pellets (24") in the same layer to provide mutual lateral confinement therebetween, the pellets each have a substantially regular geometric form and the solidified material and the plate are elastic.
L'invention concerne un blindage composite (22) servant à absorber et à dissiper l'énergie cinétique de projectiles très rapides et comprenant une couche intérieure unique de billes (24) adhérant et retenues directement les unes aux autres par un matériau solidifié (16), de façon à créer une plaque et à constituer une pluralité de rangées contiguës. Ce blindage est caractérisé par le fait que ces billes (24) possèdent une gravité spécifique d'au moins 2 et sont fabriquées en un matériau sélectionné dans le groupe constitué par du verre, un matériau réfractaire fritté, un matériau céramique ne contenant pas d'oxyde d'aluminium et un matériau céramique possédant une teneur en oxyde d'aluminium non supérieure à 80 %, la majorité de ces billes possédant chacune un axe d'au moins 3 mm de longueur et étant liée par le matériau solidifié dans la couche intérieure unique de rangées contiguës, de sorte que chacune d'une majorité de ces billes (24') est en contact direct avec au moins quatre billes contiguës (24'') de la même couche, de manière à créer un confinement latéral réciproque entre ces billes, lesdites billes présentant chacune une forme géométrique sensiblement régulière, le matériau solidifié et la plaque étant élastiques.
