A composite filter medium for removing particulates in the 3 to 4 micron range as well as dissolved chemical contaminants from a fluid. The filter medium contains an adsorbent layer for removing dissolved contaminants, and a hydrophilic layer for removing particulates. In one embodiment, the adsorbent layer comprises a supporting substrate, adsorbent particles, and binder particles. The filter medium is characterized by a mean flow pore diameter of about 1 to 10 microns, a bubble point of about 3 to 15 microns, and an air permeability of about 0.5 to 7 liters per minute/cm2 with a pressure drop of about 0.1 bar. The composite filter medium may be used in the construction of potable water filters for the removal of potentially hazardous microorganisms.
