A method is provided for re-heating a bath of molten steel, including adding to the bath a material which consists of a stoichiometric blend of 1) a deoxidant and 2) a densifier, the densifer being a metallic oxide such that, at molten steel temperatures, the deoxidant combines with the oxygen in the densifier, in an exothermic reaction which produces deoxidized metal that adds to the yield of the bath.
