A fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composite structure incorporates a woven preform containing tows of carbon or other advanced fibres (1, 3) and wires (2, 4) of shape memory alloy (SMA). The SMA wires are capable of absorbing much larger amounts of strain energy than the conventional components of FRP composites and hence enhance the impact resistance of the structure. The woven form incorporates the SMA into the structure in an optimum manner in terms of handling and performance.

L'invention concerne une structure composite de polymères renforcés de fibres (FRP) renfermant une préforme tissée renfermant des filasses de carbone ou d'autres fibres perfectionnées (1, 3) et des fils (2, 4) d'alliage à mémoire de forme (SMA). Les fils SMA peuvent absorber des quantités bien plus importantes d'énergie de déformation que les composants classiques de composites FRP et, par conséquent, améliorer la résistance aux chocs de la structure. La forme tissée renferme les SMA dans la structure d'une façon optimale en termes de manipulation et de performances.
