A nonwoven composite is disclosed which has a high transverse strength. A process for its manufacture and preferred uses are also disclosed. The laminate in accordance with the invention includes at least one nonwoven and a reinforcing material hot melt bonded thereto in a regularly repeated pattern of bonding areas, whereby the reinforcing material is derived from a thermoplastic foil. The laminate can be used as surgical gown, as textile upper material for single use, as belt, or in absorbent products such as diapers or feminine hygiene products.
