ABSTRACT A process for the fabrication of composite products from sugar cane bagasse and minor amounts of adhesive binder has been described. Steam exploded bagasse fibers, after extraction of sugar, were blended with polyethylene (low, medium and high density) and an adhesive binder (polyisocyanate) in a roll mill and compression molded at 180-210°C, at a pressure of 18.6 MPa, for 10 minutes to obtain a composite. Composites of bagasse treated with the polyisocyanate produced superior mechanical properties than the untreated bagasse composites. These composites also showed lower water absorption and better dimensional stability.
