ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A composite slow release fertilizer and soil supplement comprising about 0.5 to about 45 weight percent of a water soluble nitrogen source and about 0.25 to about 45 weight percent of a sugar wherein the ratio of nitrogen source to sugar source is between 1:1 and 20:1 on a dry matter basis. The water soluble nitrogen source and sugar are encapsulated in a hydrophilic polysaccharide having a molecular weight greater than 10,000. The composition can also include a source of soil bacteria, a buffer system, a potassium and other nutrient source, and an insoluble nitrogen source.
