A socket tool (10) is formed primarily from non-metallic composite material. The socket tool body (11) is compression molded of high-strength, glass-reinforced vinyl ester sheet molding compound. Metal inserts (20, 25) are respectively received in the driven (14) and driving (13) ends of the tool body (11), the inserts (20, 25) respectively defining openings (22, 27) for respectively mateably receiving associated driving and driven members, the inserts (20, 25) being disposed in the body (11) so that no portion of the inserts (20, 25) projects outwardly beyond the exterior surface of the body (11). The inserts (20, 25) are preferably insert molded in the body (11), but may also be fixedly secured in pre-existing recesses in the ends of the body, as by press-fitting or bonding. In the latter case, the inserts (20, 25) are provided with anti-rotation outer surfaces (81, 87, 91) which are non-circular in transverse cross-sectional shape.

Un outil (10) à douille est constitué essentiellement d'un matériau composite non métallique. Les inserts (20, 25) sont de préférence moulés dans le corps (11), mais ils peuvent être aussi fixés dans des évidement pré-existants des extrémités du corps, par exemple par ajustage à la presse ou collage. Dans ce dernier cas, les inserts (20, 25) sont pourvus de surfaces (81, 87, 91) externes anti-rotation qui sont non circulaires dans leur section transversale.
