A composite yam (5) is described, for making braided packings of the type usually utilized for sealing pump or valve rotating shafts which, in turn, are used in several different en- vironments and industrial applications. The packings in accor- dance with the present invention comprise am external layer made of a first material (1) and a core made of a second mate- rial (2) and, according to a preferred embodiment of the inven- tion, the said first material is expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) impregnated with graphite and the second material is an aramide filament. With this arrangement, the invention pro- vides for a composite yarn, which sums up the properties of good thermal conductivity, high capacity of friction reduction and good resistance to chemical attacks of the graphite impreg- nated, expanded PTFE, with the aramide's high mechanical strength, which composite yarn can be braided to form a pack- ing where only the PTFE contacts the shaft, thus protecting it against uneven wear, as caused by the prior art packings.
Fil composite (5) pour la fabrication de garnitures tressées du type normalement utilisé pour rendre étanches les axes rotatifs des pompes ou des vannes elles-mêmes utilisées dans différents milieux et dans différentes applications industrielles. Lesdites garnitures comportent une couche externe en un premier matériau (1) et un noyau en un second matériau (2) et, selon le mode préféré de réalisation, ledit premier matériau est du polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) expansé et imprégné de graphite, et le second matériau est un filament aramide. Par conséquent, on obtient un fil composite associant à la résistance mécanique élevée de l'aramide la bonne conductibilité thermique du PTFE expansé et imprégné de graphite, sa capacité élevée de réduction du frottement et sa bonne résistance aux attaques chimiques, ledit fil composite pouvant être tressé de manière à former une garniture dans laquelle seul le PTFE se trouve au contact de l'axe de sorte qu'il le protège contre l'usure inégale qui caractérise les garnitures connues de l'état de la technique.
