The invention features various composites comprising carbon fibrils, wherein the carbon fibrils have a diameter of between 3.5 and 75 nanometers, graphite layers substantially parallel to the fibril axis and a length to diameter ratio of at least 5, are substantially free of a continuous thermal carbon overcoat and are contained in an amount of less than or equal to 20% by weight. The invention further comprises methods for preparing these composites.
