A polymerized hydrogel composition and applicator for hydrating or dehydrating a surface, particularly a dermatological surface, to which it is applied and a method for forming the composition. The composition is comprised of a mixture of two polymerizable materials, a two-part redox catalyst system and a two-part polymerization medium. The percentage by weight of each element in the composition may be varied within stated percentage ranges. The rate at which hydration or dehydration occurs may be controllably altered by varying the percentages of certain of the composition elements. The applicator includes a thermoplastic center section and two reservoir sections each having a reservoir storage area for holding moisture and/or medicaments. The composition is mechanically bonded onto each of the reservoir sections and then hydrated. The applicator is designed for insertion into a human mouth after hydration and is used for treating xerostomia.

L'invention concerne une composition hydrogel et un applicateur destinés à hydrater ou déshydrater une surface, en particulier une surface dermatologique sur laquelle ladite composition est appliquée, ainsi qu'un procédé de fabrication de ladite composition. La composition selon l'invention contient un mélange de deux matériaux polymérisables, un système catalyseur redox en deux parties, et un milieu de polymérisation en deux parties. Le pourcentage en poids de chaque élément de la composition peut être modifié dans des gammes de pourcentages définies. La vitesse de l'hydratation ou de la déshydratation peut être modifiée de manière commandée par variation du pourcentage de certains éléments de la composition. L'applicateur selon l'invention comporte une partie centrale thermoplastique et deux parties réservoir ayant chacune une zone de stockage à réservoir destinée à contenir de l'humidité et/ou des médicaments. L'applicateur est conçu pour être introduit dans la cavité buccale de l'homme après hydratation et sert au traitement de la xérostomie.
