ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A symmetrical polynitropolyphenyl compound 1,3,5-trinitro-2,4,6-tripicrylbenzene, which is an explosive compound with good thermal stability and high initiation sensitivity, is prepared by reacting a trihalonitrobenzene with a picrylhalide in the presence of copper dust and suitable organic diluent at a temperature ranging between 150°C and 190°C. The improved thermal stability and high initiation sensitivity of the compound make it particularly suitable for utilization in booster cups and exploding bridge wire (EBW) detonators.
