The absorbent polymers are based on cyclodextrins. The absorbent polymers may also be used as a pharmaceutical in the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia in subjects. Preferred forms of the absorbent polymer of the present invention are: poly(.beta.-cyclodextrinacrylate), poly(.beta.-cyclodextringalacturonate), poly(.beta.-cyclodextrinmethacrylate), poly(.beta.-cyclodextringlycidylmethacrylate), poly(.beta.-cyclodextrinvinylchloride), and poly(N-.beta.-cyclodextrinacrylamide).
