Compositions and methods for reducing the rate of loss of oxygen from an oxygen containing solution. The composition comprises a choline salt such as choline chloride and a solution with a known amount of oxygen in the range between 10 and 300 mmHg. Additionally the composition optionally comprises a surfactant, an inert preservative and a biological buffer. The composition is used for increasing the life span of oxygen-calibration solutions.
