ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method for retarding the setting of cements in the fabrication of mortars and concretes. According to this method a retarding composition comprises essentially a mixture of calcium fluoride, tricalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, silicon dioxide, iron and aluminum oxides. The retarding composition is constituted by the insoluble residue obtained by dissolving raw phosphate by an inorganic acid, and preferably by the by-product coming from the manufacture of dicalcium phosphate. The retarding composition, used in quanti- ties of from 0.5 to 5% by weight relative to the cement, is efficacious even by using sea water as mixing water.
