A method of solidifying toxic or hazardous liquid waste, including the steps of pumping an aqueous waste, e.g., from a drilling fluid holding area,- through a shearing device,- adding layered phyllosilicate to said aqueous waste in an amount sufficient to solidify the aqueous waste such that the solidified aqueous waste has no free liquid; shearing the pumped aqueous waste, containing said layered phyllosilicate, sufficiently to partially exfoliate the layered phyllosilicate into phyllosilicate platelets and tactoids while in contact with the aqueous waste; pumping the sheared aqueous waste and layered phyllosilicate to a solidification area,- and allowing the sheared aqueous waste and partially exfoliated layered phyllosilicate sufficient time to solidify such that there are no free liquids remaining in the solidified waste.
L'invention porte sur un procédé qui permet de solidifier des déchets liquides toxiques ou dangereux, lequel procédé consiste à: pomper des déchets aqueux, p.ex. dans une zone de retenue de boues de forage, à travers un dispositif de cisaillement; ajouter un phyllosilicate stratifié aux déchets aqueux précités dans une quantité suffisante pour solidifier suffisamment les déchets aqueux afin que les déchets aqueux solidifiés ne contiennent pas de liquides libres; cisailler les déchets aqueux pompés, qui contiennent le phyllosilicate stratifié, suffisamment pour exfolier partiellement le phyllosilicate stratifié en plaquettes et en tactoïdes de phyllosilicate tandis que ce dernier se trouve en contact avec les déchets aqueux; pomper les déchets aqueux cisaillés et le phyllosilicate stratifié jusque dans une zone de solidification; et laisser aux déchets aqueux solidifiés et au phyllosilicate stratifié partiellement exfolié suffisamment de temps pour qu'ils puissent se solidifier de manière qu'il ne reste plus de liquides libres dans les déchets solidifiés.
