In accordance with the present invention, a novel composition has been discovered by extraction and purification from the spikes of Prunella vulgaris. Invention compositions are effective agents for treatment of the cytopathogenic effects of an enveloped virus in mammals. In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, there are provided methods for the treatment of the cytopathogenic effects of an enveloped virus and related indications in mammals, employing the above-described novel compositions as the active agent. In accordance with yet another embodiment of the present invention, it has been discovered that invention compositions are effective agents for the treatment of the cytopathogenic effects of an enveloped virus in mammals exposed to immunosuppressive regimens. In accordance with still another embodiment of the present invention, it has been discovered that invention compositions provide an effective agent for protecting mammals from reactivated viral infection during or following treatment with chemotherapeutic agents. In accordance with a still further embodiment of the present invention, there are provided methods for preparing novel extracts of Prunella vulgaris having antiviral action and the formulations containing said extracts. In accordance with a still further embodiment of the present invention, there are provided methods for purification and characterization of the active fraction from Prunella vulgaris useful for treating the cytopathogenic effects of an enveloped virus in a mammal. In accordance with a still further embodiment of the present invention, it has been discovered that invention compositions are effective agents for the prophylaxis and therapy in mammals of diseases caused by enveloped viruses.
Selon la présente invention, on a découvert une nouvelle composition au cours de l'extraction et de la purification des épis de Prunella vulgaris. Les compositions de l'invention sont des agents efficaces dans le traitement des effets cytopathogènes d'un virus enveloppé affectant des mammifères. Selon une autre réalisation de cette invention, on utilise des procédés de traitement contre les effets cytopathogènes d'un virus enveloppé et des signes apparentés affectant des mammifères au moyen des nouvelles compositions précitées utilisées comme agents actifs. Et selon encore une autre réalisation, on a découvert que les compositions de cette invention sont des agents efficaces dans le traitement des effets cytopathogènes d'un virus enveloppé affectant des mammifères exposés à des régimes immunosuppresseurs, et que ces compositions renferment un agent efficace pour protéger les mammifères des infections virales réactivées pendant ou après le traitement aux agents chimiothérapeutiques. Les procédés de cette invention sont destinés à préparer de nouveaux extraits de Prunella vulgaris ayant une action antivirale, ainsi que les formulations contenant ces extraits. Les procédés de purification et de caractérisation de la fraction active issue de Prunella vulgaris sont utiles dans le traitement des effets cytopathogènes d'un virus enveloppé affectant un mammifère. On a enfin découvert que les compositions de cette invention sont des agents efficaces dans la prophylaxie et le traitement des maladies provoquées par des virus enveloppés et affectant des mammifères.
