Melamine-formaldehyde resin dispersions containing more free formaldehyde than is desirable for health and/or pollution reasons can be treated with diketo reagents or their nitrogen analogs to reduce the free formaldehyde content while not diminishing, and in some cases even enhancing, the ability of the dispersions to detackify paint. Preferably, the resin dispersions are also treated with urea, which allows considerably less acetoacetamide to be used to achieve the same amount of formaldehyde reduction.

On peut traiter des dispersions résineuses de mélamine-formaldéhyde contenant plus de formaldéhyde libre que nécessaire pour des raisons de santé et/ou de pollution avec des réactifs dicéto ou leurs analogues azotés pour réduire la teneur en formaldéhyde libre sans réduire la faculté des dispersions de rendre la peinture moins collante et voire même en l'augmentant. Les dispersions résineuses sont, de préférence, également traitées avec de l'urée, ce qui permet d'utiliser sensiblement moins d'acétoacétamide et d'obtenir la même réduction de formaldéhyde.
