ABSTRACT A composition for the neutral sizing of paper, cardboard and other cellulose-containing materials is described. The sizing composition comprises water, a solvent which is infinitely miscible with water, preferably an alcohol, a basic reacting compound, an alkali aluminate and a sizing component. In the sizing process using this composition the fiber-containing suspension is mixed with a retention agent either before or after addition of the sizing composition, whereby the sizing composition is activated by neutralization.
