The formation of contaminants in drainage from waste rock or tailings is reduced or prevented by contacting the waste rock or tailings with an organic or inorganic sulfur compound in combination with a neutralizing agent, a fixating agent or a neutralizing agent and a fixating agent. When an organic or inorganic sulfur compound is used with the neutralizing agent or fixating agent, the amount of neutralizing agent and or the amount of fixating agent required to reduce or prevent the formation of contaminants in drainage from waste rock or tailings is substantially reduced. The amount of sulfur compound applied to the waste rock or tailings can be about 1 % to 5 % by weight and the amount of neutralizing agent and or fixating agent applied to the waste rock or tailings can be about 1 % to about 15 % by weight, based on the weight of the waste rock or tailings. The organic or inorganic sulfur compounds are those having a sulfhydryl group or an ionized sulfhydryl group or a sulfur compound which is capable of producing a sulfhydryl group or an ionized sulfhydryl group.
Afin de réduire ou de prévenir la formation de contaminants dans l'exhaure de roches stériles ou de rejets, on met les roches stériles ou les rejets en contact avec un composé organique ou inorganique de soufre associé à un agent neutralisant et/ou à un agent fixateur. Lorsque l'on utilise un composé organique ou inorganique de soufre avec l'agent neutralisant ou l'agent fixateur, la quantité d'agent neutralisant et/ou la quantité d'agent fixateur requise pour réduire ou pour prévenir la formation de contaminants dans l'exhaure de roches stériles ou de déchets est sensiblement réduite. La quantité de composé de soufre appliqué aux roches stériles ou aux rejets peut être comprise entre 1 % et 5 % en poids environ et la quantité d'agent neutralisant et/ou d'agent fixateur appliqué aux roches stériles ou aux rejets peut être comprise entre 1 % et 15 % en poids environ, par rapport au poids des roches stériles ou des rejets. Les composés organiques ou inorganiques de soufre sont ceux qui contiennent un groupe sulfhydryle, un groupe sulfhydryle ionisé ou un composé de soufre capable de produire un groupe sulfhydryle ou un groupe sulfhydryle ionisé.
