The invention concerns a composition based on zirconium and cerium oxides in an atomic ratio Zr/Ce > 1, and further comprising lanthanum oxide or an oxide of a rare earth other than cerium and lanthanum. The invention is characterized in that after calcination for 6 hours at 1150 ·C it has a specific surface area of not less than 10 m?2¿/g. The composition is obtained by forming a mixture containing a sol of a zirconium compound and cerium, lanthanum, said rare earth compounds, contacting said mixture with a basic compound solution, while heating and calcining the resulting precipitate. The composition can be used as catalyst.
L'invention concerne une composition à base d'oxydes de zirconium et de cérium dans un rapport atomique Zr/Ce > 1, et comprenant en outre de l'oxyde de lanthane et un oxyde de terre rare autre que le cérium et le lanthane, caractérisée en ce qu'après calcination 6 heures à 1150 ~C elle possède une surface spécifique d'au moins 10 m2/g. La composition est obtenue en formant un mélange comprenant un sol d'un composé de zirconium et des composés de cérium, de lanthane et de ladite terre rare, en mettant en présence ce mélange et une solution d'un composé basique, en effectuant un chauffage et en calcinant le précipité ainsi obtenu. La composition peut être utilisée comme catalyseur.
