The invention relates to a composition for cleaning dental instruments, comprising or consisting of: (a) one or more amino acids and/or salts thereof (aminocarboxylates) in a total amount of from 20 to 70 parts by weight, preferably 27.5 to 70 parts by weight, (b) one or more alpha-hydroxy acids and/or salts thereof in a total amount of from 15 to 45 parts by weight, (c) one or more alkali metal carbonates and/or bicarbonates in a total amount of from 0 to 50 parts by weight, (d) one or more surfactants in a total amount of from 0 to 5 parts by weight, (e) one or more tabletting auxiliaries in a total amount of from 0 to 10 parts by weight, (f) one or more corrosion inhibitors in a total amount of from 0 to 5 parts by weight, and (g) one or more other additives in a total amount of from 0 to 55 parts by weight, wherein components (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f) and (g) are present in total in an amount of 100 parts by weight, and wherein the components are chosen such that the pH of a solution prepared by mixing the composition with 4,000 parts by weight of water is in the range of from 7.0 to 9.5.
