Constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome are treated by a delayed and sustained release composition of an opioid antagonist which commences release of the opioid antagonist in the mid to distal small intestine or ascending colon and provides sustained release along any remaining part of the small intestine and along the colon. Preferred opioid antagonists are naloxone and naltrexone.

Selon l'invention, on traite la constipation et le syndrome du côlon irritable par une composition à libération retardée et prolongée à base d'un antagoniste opioïde qui commence à libérer ledit antagoniste entre le milieu de l'intestin grêle et l'intestin grêle distal ou côlon ascendant et qui assure une libération prolongée le long de toute partie restante de l'intestin grêle et le long du côlon. La naloxone et la naltrexone sont des antagonistes opioïdes préférés.
