ABSTRACT A composition for reacting with acidic aluminum phosphate solutions to form ultra light insulation and fireproofing layers e.g. on steel girders comprises a void making component which is a light weight aggregate e.g. expanded perlite, and/or solid blowing agent such as dolomite, magnesia and/or alumina, and at least one of a thixotropic agent e.g. bentonite and a fine particle solid e.g. talc, and preferably a ball clay.
