A composition of and method for making high performance imide resins that are processable by resin transfer molding (RTM) and resin infusion (RI) techniques were developed. Materials with a combination of properties, making them particularly useful for the fabrication of composite parts via RTM and/or RI processes, were prepared, characterized and fabricated into moldings and carbon fiber reinforced composites and their mechanical properties were determined. These materials are particularly useful for the fabrication of structural composite components for aerospace applications. The method for making high performance resins for RTM and RI processes is a multi-faceted approach. It involves the preparation of a mixture of products from a combination of aromatic diamines and aromatic dianhydrides at relatively low calculated molecular weights (i.e. high stoichiometric offsets) and endcapping with latent reactive groups. The combination of these monomers results in a mixture of products, in the imide form, that exhibits a stable melt viscosity of less than approximately 60 poise below approximately 300 ~C.
L'invention concerne une composition et un procédé permettant de préparer des résines imide haute performance pouvant être traitées par des procédés de moulage par transfert de résine (procédé RTM) et par injection de résine (RI). Des matériaux présentant une combinaison de propriétés les rendant particulièrement adaptés à la fabrication d'éléments composites par des techniques RTM ou RI ont été préparés et caractérisés, puis transformés en éléments moulés et en composites renforcés de fibres de carbone dont on a déterminé les propriétés mécaniques. Ces matériaux conviennent particulièrement à la fabrication de composants structurels composites dans les applications aérospatiales. Le procédé permettant de préparer les résines haute performance pour procédés RTM et RI comprend plusieurs processus distincts. Il consiste à préparer un mélange de produits à partir d'une combinaison de diamines aromatiques et de dianhydrides aromatiques avec des poids moléculaires théoriques relativement bas (ou un écart stoechiométrique important) et à réaliser un coiffage terminal avec des groupes réactifs latents. La combinaison de ces monomères donne un mélange de produits de forme imide, qui présente une viscosité stable à la fusion, inférieure à environ 60 poise en dessous d'environ 300 ·C.
