Hydroxypropyl cellulose is used in the manufacture of film-forming compositions for the topical treatment of trauma of body tissue, bacterial and fungal infections. The composition comprises: (a) hydroxypropyl cellulose; (b) an esterification agent which reacts with the hydroxypropyl cellulose to form a reaction product which is soluble in the solvent of paragraph (c), but insoluble in body fluids at body temperatures; and (c) a nontoxic volatile solvent for the hydroxypropyl cellulose and the reaction product.
