The present invention relates to compositions and methods for characterizing, diagnosing, and treating cancer. In particular the invention provides the means and methods for the diagnosis, characterization, prognosis and treatment of cancer and specifically targeting cancer stem cells. The present invention provides a soluble FZD receptor comprising an extracellular domain of a human FZD receptor that inhibits growth of tumor cells. The present invention still further provides a soluble receptor comprising a Fri domain of a human FZD receptor that binds a ligand of a human FZD receptor and said soluble receptor is capable of inhibiting tumor growth. The present invention still further provides a method of treating cancer comprising administering a soluble FZD receptor comprising for example, either an extracellular domain of a human FZD receptor or a Fri domain of a human FZD receptor, in an amount effective to inhibit tumor growth.

La présente invention concerne des compositions et des procédés de caractérisation, diagnostic et traitement de cancer. L'invention procure en particulier des moyens et des procédés de diagnostic, caractérisation, pronostic et traitement d'un cancer et plus spécifiquement, de ciblage de cellules cancéreuses souches. La présente invention concerne un récepteur FZD humain (Frizzled) soluble comprenant un domaine extracellulaire d'un récepteur FZD humain qui empêche la croissance de cellules tumorales. La présente invention propose aussi un récepteur soluble comprenant un domaine Fri de récepteur FZD humain qui lie un liant de récepteur FZD humain, et ledit récepteur soluble a le pouvoir d'inhiber une croissance tumorale. L'invention propose encore un procédé de traitement du cancer comprenant l'administration d'un récepteur FZD soluble qui contient par exemple, soit un domaine extracellulaire d'un récepteur FZD humain soit un domaine Fri de récepteur FZD humain, en quantité suffisante pour inhiber la croissance d'une tumeur.
